And I'm sure, just like me, you don't want your name, email, phone number, password, or any other type of personal information to get into a scammer's hands - they can get really creative with very little information.
But how should I do it?
◉ First off, start by looking in your inbox and make a list of the senders that emailed you in the last week or month.
◉ Then, get the domain name from each sender (from the email address, like no-reply@spotify.com, take the "spotify.com") and paste it into your browser.
◉ Scroll down until you find the Privacy Policy page
◉ And look for a contact email or contact form
◉ And paste this Data Removal template in the email or form:
'Dear Data Protection Officer,I am writing to you to request the deletion of my personal information from your database, under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).I include the information below in order to confirm my identity:Full name:Email:Please confirm once all my information has been removed from your systems.
If you are not the person responsible for handling these requests, please pass this email to your relevant department.'
Don't forget to include your full name and email so they can identify you, and follow up with them after 2 weeks if you don't hear anything back.

I keep saying this - reducing your digital exposure, minimises your risk of being exposed in a data breach, which leaves scammers with no weapons against you - no information, harder to fool you.
So here's a few steps for you to remember next time you're not sure if an email is legit or a scam:
• Check the sender - does it come from the real source? And remember! "gov.com" is not the same as "gov.com.xyz" - while the first one is the legitimate domain, the second is a cheap domain controlled by the scammer
• Check the website - copy the domain part of the email and paste it into Google search. If the results match what you pasted and that the website is real (note that I said REAL and not WORKING)
• Check the domain against WHOIS database - many scam emails use newly "purchased" domains. So if the domain is new, but it tries to impersonate an older entity, you know it's a scam.
